Dead Man Fingers
A dead man’s finger “plant” is actually a mushroom. It is shaped like a human finger, each about 1.5 to 4 inches (4-10 cm.) tall. A clump of the mushrooms looks like a human hand. The mushroom arises in spring. It may be pale or bluish with a white tip at first. The fungus matures to dark gray and then black. During times in the past when supersititions where a way of life, I could imagine someone walking thru the woods and coming across what would appear to be the dead coming out of the ground to join the living. Screams and running would be involved to remove oneself from the situation. Since this grouping was coming out of a pile of old goat manure I wasn’t scared, well not very much.
